Autumn Sky – Interior Course - Part2

Welcome back to Part 2 of our Autumn Sky Interior Colour Scheme Course.

To recap, in Part 1 of the course it was all about Inspiration & letting an image that you love, flow through into creating a colour palette for a potential project.

In Part 2 we are going to be taking our ‘Top Six’ colours and transitioning them into interior products & imagery that emotes what we desire with the space we are designing.

At this point we are still loosely conceptualizing. For the Autumn Sky Interior, I was bearing in mind an open plan Kitchen/Dining/Living, but for your first attempt start where you are comfortable or apply to an area in your home you are considering renovating or decorating. I want you to know, the same method for colour scheming can be used throughout your home, from the office to the family bathroom. I chose an open plan space to demonstrate as it is typically an area that the aesthetic can easily become confused and lost when not suitably planned.

Begin by listing elements that the space could physically include, while remembering we are generating a concept.

For example: A Lighting Feature

I personally love Interiors with some sort of feature lighting. Lighting adds character, can set a mood and help define a zone within open plan areas. At this stage I have no idea of the pragmatics of placement, ceiling height, or the zone I want to highlight. However, I feel it should have some place within the design.

Check out my list below:

  • Flooring

  • Wallpaper (texture)

  • Paint

  • Lighting Feature

  • Upholstery (pattern/texture)

  • Curtains (soft)

  • Stone Bench

  • Tiles (colour/texture)

  • Timber

  • Coffee Tables/Side Tables

  • Dining Table

  • Plants

This list is a handy reference point when you begin to source prospective products and finishes.

For the Autumn Sky project, I was drawn to the idea of there being one element that really sums up the ‘Top Six’ colours from the palette we created in Part 1 of the course.

Two areas I felt I could possibly link this idea are Lighting or Upholstery. I connect with both and they are something I’m always excited about when I enter a room. Remember we want to always be going back to that inspired feeling we got from our image. If your image had a lot of timber, you could begin with flooring. If there was a lot of rock then naturally you might be led to looking at stone bench tops or tiles.

*Tip* Don’t forget to cast your eye back over your existing Pinterest Boards or home improvement magazine as you may have already dog eared or put an Asterix next to a Pendant light or chair that you loved, which could in turn be included in your home after all. Also don’t forget to think about what you already own. You could have the most comfortable sofa that just needs recovering.

While browsing through Warwick fabrics website I found a gorgeous upholstery fabric that really speaks to 5/6 of our ‘Top Six’. Its called Hinterland in the colour way charcoal. I feel like this could be the element that really pulls the concept together. It also comes in a couple of other colours ways, so don’t forget to check them out in case they could work for your design (see link below).

The next most important feature on my list was LIGHTING!!! There are so many gorgeous options available when it comes to choosing a feature light, however because we have already done the leg work for our colour palette and inspiration it will narrow down the options significantly.

Looking back at the Autumn Sky image I love the glowing effect of the colours, but also the moodiness of the darker contrasting foreground. The Dulux colour Passage Rock is giving that moodiness that I’m after within the design, therefore with this in mind I’m thinking a type of coloured glass could achieve something similar. This then can give us something to put into our Pinterest or google search, I went with ‘Amber Light Shade’ where I found these beauties.

I now know what it is I’m looking for which lead me to find this pendant I fell in love with, from a local source mrralph.co.nz. Their Willow Glass Pendant in Rust became the top of my list as it captured the combination of glow, colour and moodiness that is in the Autumn Sky image.

I recommend you check out the link and see what else they have on offer if you love lighting as much as I do.

So now we are beginning to really convert and pull together imagery of possible fixtures/fittings/textiles/finishes that could make up our Interior. From here all there is to do is start working your way through the reference list we created and quickly you will have a ‘scrap book’ that encompasses everything we desire for our design.

*Tip* Remember to Save as you go, whether that means creating a scrap book, a digital folder, a board on Pinterest. Keep in mind you need to be able to compare images or samples against one another so gathering them in one place is preferred.

In Part 3 of this Digital Course I’ll be taking you through editing down your Mood Board so that it is comprehensive, followed by how we make all of this connect with the practical side of designing our interior.
